The Eighteen Ministers of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York (1628 to 1801) 1.Michaelius, Jonas He arrived in April of 1628 and served until he returned to the Netherlands at the end of 1631 or the beginning of 1632. 2.Bogardus, Everardus Everardus, who eventually married Anneke Jans (my ancestor), had arrived in March 1633.He died on a return voyage to the Netherlands in August of 1647. 3.Backerus, Johannes Cornelisz. He was appointed minister of the church in July of 1647. After serving only two years he returned to The Netherlands. 4.Megapolensis, Johannes This minister served for a very long time after his appointment was made in New Amsterdam in August of 1649. He died in service of office in January 1670. 5.Megapolensis, Samuel Samuel, the son of Johannes, is another man who held the position of minister for quite a long time. He had left The Netherlands on January 20, 1664 and after his arrival in New Amsterdam he assisted his father in the duties of the office. He kept this position until shortly before his father's death returning to his homeland in 1669. 6.Drisius, Samuel He had been sent over to be an assistant to the minister in 1652. At a later time, most likely after the death of Johannes Megapolensis he was acting minister and then became minister, serving until July of 1671. 7.Luyck, Aegidius When Samuel Drisius became ill and infirm, Aegidius was requested to serve in March of 1671. He carried the work of the office until a permanent minister came over. 8.Nieuwenhuysen, Wilhelmus Wilhelmus arrived to take over the duties from Aegidius in July 1671 and he held the position until his death which occurred on February 17, 1681. 9.Selyns, Henricus Henricus, was not only the minister to the church in New Amsterdam itself, but between 1660 and 1664, he also preached at Stuyvesant's bouwery and in Brooklyn. Shortly after this period he went back home, but came back over in 1682 when the colony was now called New York. He carried on the office until he died in September of 1701. 10.Du Bois, Gualterus This man served in office for over 50 years. Taking the position in the month of October of 1699, he held it until the ninth of the same month in 1751 when he died. 11.Boel, Henricus On December 16, 1715, Henricus received an appointment to the New York church. After he arrived he served as an assistant to Du Bois. When Du Bois died he took over until he died in office on June 27, 1754. 12.Ritzema, Joannes He came over from The Netherlands, arriving in New York on the 14th day of October 1744. At first he acted as an assistant to Du Bois and later took over with the death of Boel. During the Revolution he was forced to flee in April of 1776. Later, deposed February 10, 1785, he resumed office in New York and was eventually declared minister emeritus. 13.De Ronde, Lambertus Lambertus was in New York on August 30, 1750 where he had been called as an assistant. He ran into the same problems as Joannes, being deposed on the same date, but later he also was made minister emeritus. 14.Laidlie, Archibald Archibald arrived in New York in June of 1764 and he served as an assistant to preach in the English language. He served until his death in exile in 1779. 15.Livingston, John Henry He came over to New York to serve as an assistant and arrived September 3, 1770. From 1776 to 1783 he was absent from office. (Probably due to the Revolution). John Henry was the Senior minister from 1783 to 1810. 16.Linn, William On November 9, 1786, William was made an assistant and he retired on the first of May in 1805. 17.Kuypers, Gerardus Arense He was made an assistant in May, 1789, and he then kept the office of minister until his death on June 28, 1833. 18.Abeel, John Neilsen John took the call as an assistant on October 1, 1795. He died in office on January 19, 1812, the same year as that famous war.
