Jean Galeran Boucher

He was the son of Marin Boucher and Perrine Mallet. Baptized on the 16th of
February 1633 at St. Langis near Mortagne, France, he was brought to Canada by
his parents in 1634 or 1635.
Marin Boucher gave this son two arpents (between 2 to 3 acres) of his land at
Chateau Richer on 30 April 1656 with the abutters being Marin's brother-in-law,
Jean Plante, and also Auber the notary. He added to this gift on 15 December 1662
by granting 7 1/2 more arpents.
The census of 1667 confirms that Jean Galleran was residing at Chateau Richer
on land between his father and Jean Plante. In 1666 Jean Galleran was qualified as a
mason and in 1681 as a wheelwright.
On the 10th of October in 1661 at Chateau Richer he took as his bride Marie Leclerc
who was the daughter of Jonas and Marie Parmentier of St. Remi, Dieppe, France. A
contract had been drawn up by Auber the notary on 15 September 1661.
For some reason on 18 July 1663 he exchanged some of his land with Pierre
Saint Denis and received in return a property located at the Ange-Gardien in the
seigneurie of Lothainville that was about 6 acres in width and about 2 deep. He
sold this property the following September to someone called Jacob for 1100 livres.
At that time the abutters were Abraham Fiset and Vincent Verdon.
After Marin Boucher died I was told, Jean Galleran joined with his brother, Pierre,
for a while at the parish of Ste. Famille on I'le d'Orleans. From 1675 until his death he
established his home at La Boutaillerie (Riviere Ouelle). In the census of 1681 it is
shown that he was residing on land between the seigneur Jean Baptiste Deschamps and
Robert Leavecque. It is stated that he had two guns, fifteen head of cattle and that six
acres were under cultivation.
His wife, Marie Leclerc, died at the Hotel-Dieu of Quebec at 61 years of age on
October 8, 1702. Not quite seven years later, Jean Galleran received a notice of
ordinance from the Intendant on 22 July 1709 which made the decision that land he had
sold to Francois Albert would be returned to him provided that the widow of Francois
would be released from all debt. I hope that he did do this. Less than five years later
Jean Galleran Boucher died on 14 March 1714.
