James Buchanan and Elizabeth Dwyer

James Buchanan, born about 1796, came to New Brunswick from
County Derry, Ireland in 1825.
He married Elizabeth Dwyer on 2/8/1827 at Sheffield, Sunbury
County, New Brunswick. We have not established who her parents were,
but her father may have been one Thomas Dwyer who at an earlier
date had been given a land grant.
The family resided in Wilmot, Carleton County, New Brunswick and
farmed the land there. One of my uncles who worked for one of James
Buchanan's descendants said that in the early 1900's much of the land
was given over to the production of potatos.
James and Elizabeth had the following children:
  • Elizabeth b. ca. 1829
  • Mary Jane b. 1830 d. 1904
  • Marjory b. ca. 1832
  • James Jr. b. Jan. 1834 d. 25/8/1910
  • Sarah H. b. ca. 1836
         Elizabeth married Thomas G. Toms.
My great, great grandmother, Mary Jane, married Isaac Perkins on 8/8/1850
at Jacksontown, New Brunswick. He was the son of Richard Perkins and
     Catherine DeLong.
Marjory Buchanan married George West on 29 August 1852.
The only son, James Jr., married on the 27th day of August in 1853 to
Lydia E. York. She was born on 3/1/1835 and died on 28/3/1914. James
died 25 August 1910. Both are buried in the Centreville United Church
    Cemetary.
Sarah, the last child, was married to David Fitzgerald on 12 October 1859.
David came to Carleton County from Prince Edward Island.
We know of two siblings of James Buchanan, one was his sister Elizabeth
who married George Reid, and the other, his older brother John. On John's
tombstone at Magundy, New Brunswick it says he came from County Derry.
He died 6/3/1864 at the age of 71 years and we can deduce that he was
    born in 1793.
John Buchanan may have arrived in New Brunswick before his brother James
and he may be the reason James emigrated in 1825. About 1821 John married
Margaret Cochrane and we do not know her parents. She died at Magundy on
15/12/1859 at the age of 64, thus was born in 1795. They had a daughter, Mary,
born about 1822 at Magundy. She was married to Ritchie McGirr in York County
in 1844. He was born in Ireland in 1824.

If you know any more about the Buchanan families of New Brunswick or who
Elizabeth Dwyer's parents may have been, we would surely appreciate hearing
from you and if we can help in your research in any way we would be glad to
help you out---Ted & Pat (OÕConnell) Brassard
