The Origins and Early Ancestors of the New Brunswick DeLong Families by Theodore Brassard November 9, 1997 Introduction This article is being written to provide information condensed from about 15 years of notes derived from many sources. A great deal of this data was contributed by William Tufts of Ontario who spent many years researching DeLong family lines. Thanks to his persistance and determined efforts it is now possible to tie my New Brunswick ancestor, Catherine DeLong, to the DeLong families that settled in New York towards the end of the 17th century. The surnames found in the records studied have considerable variation and changes over a period of more than 100 years before the name was fairly consistently spelled as it is today as DeLong. Some of the most often seen variants are: De Langet, De Langen, Langen, De Langh, DeLonge, Langet, and De Laenge. In some cases the DeLong surname was dropped entirely with the person using their middle name instead. One line still under study is that of Franciscus Adrianusz. De Langet who is the progenitor of the New Brunswick families. He was born in 1634 in North Brabant, The Netherlands and, one of his sons, using the method of those times in adopting the father's given name as a surname, was called Adrianus Franciscusz. De Langet. This second generation individual used various shortened forms of his name which made tracing his activities very difficult to say the least. Some of the forms he employed were: Ary Fransen, Ary Franz Langet, Adriaan Fransen De Langet, Arry DeLangen, and Aryan Fransen. There may be others not yet uncovered. Ary was probably born about 1655, since his first child, Willemtje, was born in New Amsterdam about 1679. His marriage to Rachel Jansen Pier occurred in 1678 or 1679. I have no records to substantiate these estimates that were given to me by other people. The first factual evidence I have actually seen concerns their second child, Frans, who was baptized at Kingston, Dutchess county of New York on the 24th day of April in 1681. It appears so far that the major part of the early family history of this part- icular DeLong family line centers in the Dutchess and Ulster counties of New York and the towns of Fishkill, Kingston, and Poughkeepsie. Research by William Tufts of Ottawa, Ontario indicates that Westchester county is also involved. To further complicate the research many of the DeLong names found in various areas may possibly be related to the line of Peter DeLong of Pennsylvania and who is said to be of German ancestry. It is also quite possible that all DeLong families could be of German ancestry having migrated down the Rhine to The Netherlands. Peter does appear in a list of the taxpayers for the town of Fishkill as will be shown later. It has therefore ben necessary to be extremely cautious in attributing and connecting any descendant to the line of this family whose head is said to be Franciscus Adrianuszoon De Langet. Adrianus Franciscuszoon De Langet was born about 1653 at North Brabant. He came to New Amsterdam and eventually settled at Kingston in Dutchess Co., New York. Adrianus married Rachel Jansen Pier about 1678/79. She was born 1657-59 and was the daughter of Jan Theunisson Pier and Marritje Jans. Jan Pier who was most likely born in The Netherlands, died before 1676, since his wife, Marritje remarried on the 12th of April in that year to Willem Jansen Roman. Adrianus and Rachel had issue as follows: Willemtje b. ca. 1679 in New Amsterdam, m. 22/11/1696 to Teunis Cool.
